BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Five incredible Yayoi Kusama pieces were sold in Artingstall & Hind Auctioneers’ May 31 auction. The world-renowned artist Kusama has displayed works at LACMA, MOMA New York and Tokyo, and the Tate Modern. Her original acrylic painting on canvas titled Pumpkin, 2001, sold for an impressive $84,000. LiveAuctioneers.com provided absentee and Internet live bidding.
Among the 300 lots featured in the auction were four Kusama lithographic prints all signed in both English and Japanese, numbered and dated by the artist. Each piece is characterized by her signature polka dots and “infinity net” repetitive patterns, a motif that spans throughout much of her creative work. Born in 1929, Kusama has been an incredibly influential artist in the postwar New York art scene and continues to be one of the most prominent Japanese contemporary artists of today. She currently lives and works in Tokyo.
Among the other outstanding lots sold in Artingstall & Hind Auctioneers’ Fine Collection of Antique Buddha’s & Works of Art auction was an African painted wooden shield, which sold for $3,600.
An artistically handcrafted 18K gold ring with vivid green jadeite jade cabochon sold for $5,400. It was accompanied by a certificate from Hong Kong Jade & Stone Lab indicating natural Type A jadeite jade.
