NEW YORK – On Thursday, June 1, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct a sale of Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art. As always, the sale is curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The June 1 sale presents 555 lots spanning dozens of categories. Choices include an Art Nouveau mug issued by Limoges in 1899; a circa-1920 cast iron eagle described as having a good surface and well-detailed wings and talons; a painted tramp art box with inset mirrors; a star-shape windmill weight; a Pairpoint vaseline glass brides basket in excellent condition; an early to mid-20th-century hooked rug with an image of New Hampshire’s famed Old Man in the Mountain; a circa-1940s ruby-stained 14-piece punch bowl, ladle and cups set by the Indiana Glass company; and a pair of French mother-of-pearl-decorated opera glasses with the phrase ‘Christmas 1877’ inscribed on the metal bridge that links the lenses.

Also on offer are a series of 18th-century prints of images of fruit by the French artist Duhamel du Monceau; an impressive-looking Art Deco-style cut crystal perfume bottle; a chess set hand-carved from stone, offered with an inlaid stone chess board; a cast-iron bottle opener in the form of a skunk; a Meyer Texas pottery Bluebonnet creamer jug; a whirligig; and a 1960s cookie jar shaped like a monk or friar who holds a scroll that reads THOU SHALL NOT STEAL (COOKIES).

1773 needlework sampler by Betsy Mansfield of Salem, Mass., estimated at $4,500-$5,500
1773 needlework sampler by Betsy Mansfield of Salem, Mass., estimated at $4,500-$5,500

Earning highlight status is a needlework sampler stitched in 1773 by 11-year-old Betsy Mansfield of Salem, Mass., and estimated at $4,500-$5,500. Mansfield was one of seven children, and the lot notes describe her sampler as “ambitious.” In fact, the girl might possibly have bitten off more than she could chew, as she left the silk-on-linen sampler unfinished. She did manage to complete a verse that reads, ‘This Needle Work Of Mine Can Tell / When A Child is Learned Well By My / Parent’s I Was Taught Not to Spend/ My Time For Nought.’

Another strong textile work that appears among the highlights is a 1930s Wedding Ring Stars pattern cotton quilt from Ohio. The lot’s headline describes it as “unusual” due to its “more complex design variation that has two-tone orange stars in the background.” The quilt measures 80 by 106in and has an estimate of $700-$1,000.

Frank Finney carving of a woodcock, estimated at $5,500-$6,000
Frank Finney carving of a woodcock, estimated at $5,500-$6,000

Completing the highlights is an undated Frank Finney carving of a woodcock. The bird is depicted at life size, standing among leaves. Its lot notes enthuse that it has “Superior life-like paint, surface and patina … Take time to see the detailed carving around eyes.” It is estimated at $5,500-$6,000.
