NEW YORK – More than a half dozen examples of antique needlework, several more than 200 years old, are star attractions in a Jasper52 online auction of Americana and folk art that will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 11. Bid absentee or live online exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.

A finely executed sampler offered in the auction was the work of 12-year-old Eliza C. McCullough of Tuckerton, New Jersey. Dated 1838, the silk and wool on linen sampler (above) records 11 rows of family information. The bottom half of the sampler features pictorial motifs including a shepherd with his dog, sheep, a lamb, birds and flowers. The sampler is expected to sell for $7,000-$8,000.

Items made in England and on the Continent made their way to the Colonies and are included in the Americana category. One such piece is a late 18th century English needlework picture (below) of a couple courting in a wooded setting. Pictured in the upper left is a Phoenix bird, symbolizing rebirth and longevity. Worked with silk thread on linen, the textile is in excellent condition and conservation mounted in a new frame (est. $6,000-$7000).

Also made of iron is a circa 1930s shooting gallery target in the form of a mule. When the shooter hit the bull’s-eye, the red circle, a spring mechanism caused the mule’s legs to kick backward (est. $1,200-$1,500). The target was found in New York State with a recent coat of paint.

Not every child in 19th century America was fortunate to have a toy. One lucky kid growing up in the 1880s took good care of the horse and cart pull toy offered in the action (est. $1,500-$2,000).
