Leading the UK travel category is an original 1930s LMS railway poster by Norman Wilkinson for the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland (above). The hotel, which opened in 1924, was built by the former Caledonian Railway Co. The hotel’s golf course and luxurious surroundings meant that golf and grouse shooting at Gleneagles had, by the 1950s, become a fixed part of high society’s calendar. Artist Norman Wilkinson designed the poster, which measures 40.6 by 50.6 inches (est. £450-£900/$576-$1,152).
From the U.S. comes a 1960s travel poster for TWA airlines flights to Las Vegas, where fun and entertainment can be found night or day. The poster by David Klein measures 40.8 by 25.2 inches (est. £375-£750/$480-$960).
The auction will begin with a collection of World War I posters. Leading the charge is a recruitment poster published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee featuring a quote by Field Marshal Lord Kitchener (Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener; 1850-1916) appealing for people to join the British Army. It was printed by Bemrose & Sons Ltd., London & Derby and measures 34.4 by 20.4 inches (est. £180-£360/$230-$461).
An original Polish movie poster for the U.S. film Sunset Blvd. (1950), the classic Billy Wilder black comedy about faded silent-film star Norma Desmond, measures 34 by 23 inches. The poster was designed by artist Waldemar Swierzy in 1957 (est. £1,200-£2,400/$1,536-$3,073).
The image of a speed skater in full stride graces an original poster for the Northern Winter Games, Nordiska Spelen, which were held in Stockholm, Sweden, Feb. 4-12, 1922. The artwork by the Swedish artist Gunnar Widholm (1882-1953). A predecessor to the Winter Olympic Games, the Nordic Games were organized by Gen. Viktor Gustaf Balck (1844-1928) of Sweden starting in 1901 (est. £450-£900/$576-$1,152).
This live online auction will start at 3 p.m. UK time/10 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, Nov. 10.
