A tale of two mansions comes to life at Leslie Hindman’s July 12-13 auction

CHICAGO – Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will conduct a sale of 804 lots of fine furniture and decorative arts July 12 and 13, 2009, featuring property from a historic Ohio house and from Chicago’s Wood-Maxey-Boyd house. Internet live bidding will be available through www.LiveAuctioneers.com.

Both homes whose contents are included in Hindman’s sale are located in once-prestigious neighborhoods, and the furniture and decorative arts offered in the auction define their original grandeur.

Property of Wood-Maxey-Boyd house comes from the estate of Alva B. Maxey-Boyd. Both she and her husband, Chicago attorney Charles W. Boyd, had a great interest in architecture. In 1948 they purchased the historic Wood House, a Queen Anne mansion built in 1885.

The home, built along South Prairie Avenue, evaded mid-century urban renewal and demolition thanks to Mr. Boyd’s legal expertise and dedication to preservation. In 2003, after years of restoration and a passionate speech by Mrs. Maxey-Boyd, the Commission of Chicago Landmarks designated the Wood-Maxey-Boyd house a city landmark.

Property from the estate includes six lots of distinguished American furniture and glass, among them a Tiffany curtain border lampshade estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Highlights from the historic Ohio home include a Continental marquetry bureau mazarin, raised on tapering octagonal legs with animal and floral inlays throughout, a Sévres-style gilt metal mounted urn on stand, and an American walnut breakfront bookcase with carved owl decoration.

Property from both collections, along with other fine furniture and decorative arts,
silver, Asian works of art, ethnographic art, and rugs will be on exhibit for preview
from Wednesday, July 8 though Saturday, July 11 at 1338 West Lake Street.
