TAVARES, Fla. – There’s a reason why Abingdon Auctions in central Florida has such a loyal following. They’re known for their skillful handling of quality estate material, from furniture and decorative arts to popular collectibles of all types. Their November 17 auction, with absentee and Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers, includes a special offering of antique and vintage gold and silver jewelry plus coins.
The sterling silver category is led by Lot 142, a Towle 59-piece flatware set in the Legato pattern. This service (shown above) weighs 89.2 ozt and is presented in a handsome wood storage chest. It is estimated at $1,500-$1,800.
Lot 84, a classic 14K gold bead choker, measures 15 inches long and is boxed. Weighing .80 ozt, it is expected to make $500-$600.
Another fine jewelry piece that is likely to find favor with the ladies is Lot 178, a modified antique 14K gold pin or pendant styled with triple rings adorned with pearls. This eye-catcher is estimated at $400-$500.
Gorham, a revered name in the pantheon of American silversmiths, is represented in the sale by Lot 115, a 4-piece sterling silver tea set made in 1930. The set has a total weight of 39.7 ozt and bears a unicorn mark. The auction estimate is $550-$600.
Also within the 201-lot sale is a selection of decorative art, with an emphasis on desirable ceramics by such makers as Weller, Roseville, Wedgwood, McCoy and Fulper. A choice example is Lot 187, a Roseville Baneda vase with a multicolored band of botanical design against a pink mottled ground. The double-loop-handle vase is in mint condition and has a Roseville gold foil sticker. Estimate: $300-$400
Lot 23, a Fenton 14-inch red Coinspot basket in mint condition with Fenton tag, is described by auctioneer Steve Zeiler as “a rare find – I’ve never seen one like it before.” Exhibiting the highest standards of glass artistry and originality of technique, it is estimated at $250-$350.
