Actor’s tribal collection to open Clars’ Jan. 18-19 auctions

OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery will present the personal oceanic and tribal collections of Richard Kelton of Marina Del Rey, Calif., to the market. Clars will be offering these two extensive collections over the course of their January, February and March 2020 sales with the first installment to be presented on Saturday, Jan. 18. Richard Kelton (1943-1978) made his mark as a successful actor in both TV and on the big screen. His real passion, however, lied in the life and mysteries of the ocean. When he wasn’t voyaging aboard his yacht, he was busy running the Richard Kelton Foundation and working to expand his collections.
Over 50 select lots will be offered on Jan. 18. Among the top highlights will be a pair of Polynesian Marquesas Islands style standing figures (above) that will be offered for $4,000-$6,000. A Vanuata (formerly New Caledonia) Melanesia large and well-carved standing male figure will be presented with the same estimate.
A 19th century Polynesian feast board, possibly Hawaiian, is another highlight and carries the estimate of $2,000-$4,000. A dramatic figural helmet mask used in ceremonies and rituals by the Small Nimba people on Malekula Island (Vanuata), will also be offered for $2,000-$4,000 as will a Papua New Guinea large canoe prow that features a carved face mask (below).

On Sunday, Jan. 19, the important oil on canvas by James Gill (American, b. 1934) titled Grand Canyon, 1968, will be offered (below). One of the founders of the Pop Art movement, this painting is an excellent example of his famous style that graces the walls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and numerous other renowned museums and galleries around the world. Grand Canyon will be offered for $15,000-$20,000.

A private collection of over 33 European and American, cow and cattle landscape paintings will also be offered. Works by William Hahn (American, 1829-1887), Edmond De Pratere (Belgian, 1826-1888), Leon Georges Calves (French, 1848-1924) and many other noted artists will be featured.
The prints and multiples category will be led by a most recognizable lithograph in colors by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901). La Revue Blanche, 1895, will be offered for $7,000-$10,000.

A stunning early 18th century French Regence looking glass headlines this category’s offerings. This mirror, featuring C scrolls and heavy relief carving, will be offered for $8,000-$12,000.

Jumping forward two centuries, in midcentury modern furniture, the highlight will be a Helge Vestergaard Jensen for Peder Pedersen teak daybed estimated at $5,000-$7,000.
Turning to the historic and whimsical, a circa 1900 Tonawanda man calliope carousel figure by the Herschell Spillman Carousel Co. is an exciting piece for special collectors and will be offered for $4,000-$6,000.
The highlights of the exceptional fine jewelry to be offered at this sale include an 8.44-carats alexandrite, diamond and 14K white gold ring that is estimated at $16,000-$19,000. Equally dazzling is a sapphire-laden, diamond and 18K white gold bracelet estimated at $9,000-$12,000 and an extraordinary diamond and 18K rose gold bracelet (below) which features 93 full-cut pink and 87 near colorless diamonds that is estimated to sell for $9,000-$10,000.

In timepieces, an 1887 Patek Philippe 18K rose gold minute repeater open face pocket watch will take center stage and is estimated to sell for $6,000-$8,000.
A Chinese jade carving featuring two phoenix-like birds on the top will lead this category and will be offered for $4,000-$6,000.
An ink and color on silk attributed to Pu Ru (1896-1963) titled Zhong kui, will be another highlight and carries the estimate of $3,000-$5,000.
