Arader Galleries auction June 3 offers grand views of natural history

NEW YORK – Arader Galleries will conduct an auction Saturday, June 3, that focuses on nature and natural history. The  273-lot auction will take place at 1016 Madison Ave. in Manhattan beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The sale will begin with material from John James Audubon’s Birds of America and Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. Highlights include the Carolina Parrot (below; Lot 10), the Pileated Woodpecker (Lot 12), the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker (Lot 11) and the Silver Fox (Lot 21).

There is an excellent offering of natural history works on paper including works by Pierre Joseph Redoute, Basilius Besler, Priscilla Bury, Robert Furber, among other notable artists.

Top lots from the selection of paintings and watercolors, include a stunning early still life painting by Italian master of the Flemish genre style, Vincenzo Campi (Lot 80), two works of the Italian countryside by Edward Lear (Lots 92-93), and a Napoleonic Naval Battle scene by Garneray (Lot 90).

Highlights of the rare book section includes Gould’s Family of Toucans (Lot 104), Gould’s Birds of Great Britain (top; Lot 105), a rare final octavo edition of Audubon’s Birds of America (Lot 110) and a handsome French edition of Ortelius’ Theatre de L’univers … (Lot 116).

The sale also includes a selection of pivotal maps and views, with a rare first edition, first issue of the most important map in American history, Mitchell’s 1755 Map of the British and French Dominions in North America (Lot 223). Other highlights include the map used to settle the Republic of Texas’ eastern boundary Map of the River Sabine (Lot 207) and Gastaldi’s exceptional Map of the Middle East (Lot 172).

The sale concludes with a varied offering of works on paper including works by George Catlin, Karl Bodmer and Currier & Ives.
