SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – Turner Auctions + Appraisals will present Part 2 of the Armond Conti collection of model trains on Sunday, January 29, beginning at 10:30 am Pacific time. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Featuring 200 lots from the estate of Armond Conti, a Northern Californian who collected trains for more than 75 years, the sale presents a variety of fine, distinctive and desirable pre-war and post-war train offerings – some new old stock, some unused, and many in their original boxes. These include locomotives, tenders and cabooses; numerous sets and groupings; and a wide selection of train cars, including flat, passenger and baggage (Madison, Baby Madison and Heavyweight among them), fire, milk, dump, refrigerator, box, freight, coach, vat, and missile and helicopter cars.
Many accessories appear in the lineup as well. Besides switches, transformers and Gargraves track, there are loaders for logs and oil drums, gatemen, platforms, a coal elevator, a nuclear reactor, a burro crane, automobiles, and also billboards and street lights. Many lots are Lionel model trains; other manufacturers represented in the sale include MTH, 3rd Rail, K-Line, Atlas, Williams, KMT, Kusan, LGB, and REA/Polk. Most are O gauge.
Highlights of the upcoming sale include a Lionel Sears general set of five model train engines and cars. Specifically, the five models are: a Lionel Sears general set 1882 Western and Atlantic locomotive in black and orange, which is missing its whistle; an 1882T Western and Atlantic tender, painted black and orange; an 1866 Western and Atlantic U.S. mail car sporting a brown and yellow color scheme, as well as scratches to its roof; a brown and blue 1885 Western and Atlantic coach with roof scrapes at the corners; and an 1887 flat car for horses, painted brown and having yellow fences. It comes with six horses, two each in black, brown and white. None of the model trains have boxes. They are together estimated at $200-$400.
Carrying the same estimate is a Lionel Postwar 2240 Wabash F-3A and F-3B 2240, which are offered as a pair. On the Wabash F-3A, the horns, steps, trucks and couplers are intact, but there is corrosion on the horns, and the paint has heavy wear spots in the usual areas. Its horn battery compartment is clean, but the nose decal is yellowed and the horn sticker is partly missing. The 2240 Wabash F-3B has intact steps, trucks and couplers, but has rust spots on its step mounts.
Also estimated at $200-$400 is a Williams electric trains Southern Pacific GS-4 4-8-4 Daylight No. 5600 O Gauge locomotive and tender. It is in its original packaging and comes with its shipping carton. Another standout is a Lionel 2552 Canadian Pacific vista dome aluminum passenger car with evidence of wear from use. Its estimate is $100-$200.
Completing the highlights is Lot 91, a Lionel 6-14065 accessory No 463 model nuclear reactor. This surprising offering has retained its original box and has an estimate of $150-$250.
