CINCINNATI – Cowan’s Auctions will offer the remarkable Plains and Eastern Woodlands collection of Robert P. Jerich in its Sept. 18 American Indian Art auction. The Jerich Collection is expected to be the highlight of the 462-lot auction, which also features the first portion the rattle collection of Dick Jemison, Alabama, an estate from Ohio of fresh to the market Pueblo and Plains material, and a sizeable section of ancient art of the Eastern Woodlands. “Mr. Jerich is well known and respected in American Indian Art collecting circles and has been affectionately called ‘Bobby Arrows,’” said Danica Farnand, Cowan’s director of Native American, prehistoric and tribal art. “His knowledge and passion shines through every piece that is being offered from his carefully curated collection.”
The top lot of the Jerich Collection is expected to be a Sioux Elk Dreamer Society beaded hide tobacco bag (Lot 182). The late-19th century bag is sinew-sewn and beaded in colors of navy blue, light green, candy apple red white-heart, pink red white-heart, greasy blue, greasy yellow, translucent red, light pink, faceted brass, light blue, black and white. One side of the bag depicts a warrior dressed in a feathered bonnet holding a staff, a warrior on horseback and two pipes. The opposite side also depicts two brightly colored pipes, along with a spotted elk with “power lines,” and the Elk Dancer with hoop and staff. The bag carries a $50,000-$60,000 estimate.
Other highlights from the collection include a Sioux beaded hide tobacco bag (Lot 184) purportedly belonging to Chief Red Cloud (Lakota, 1822-1909) estimated to sell for $20,000-$30,000; a brightly colored Sioux beaded and quilled rifle scabbard (Lot 219) estimated at $15,000-$20,000; and an Eastern Woodlands doll cradle with doll (Lot 98) estimated at $15,000-$18,000.
An exceptional Eastern presentation pipe tomahawk (Lot 75) descended in the family of Capt. Agreen Crabtree (1732-1808) highlights the weaponry category. In addition to the impeccable provenance, adding to the desirability of the piece is its meticulous design and craftsmanship which is remarkably similar to a tomahawk housed within the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. The tomahawk carries an estimate of $40,000-$50,000.
The auction begins with 68 lots of ancient art of the Eastern Woodlands featuring material from the Karl G. Parchert Collection, Michigan. The highlight of the section is expected to be a 2.75-inch Adena quartz bust birdstone (Lot 30). The birdstone, offered with complete, documented collection history including time in the Clemens Caldwell Collection, is expected to fetch $20,000-$25,000.
Other notable lots in the auction include an Ashiwi polychrome pottery jar (Lot 404) estimated to sell for $40,000-$60,000; a brightly colored Nez Perce-Cayuse beaded buffalo hide blanket strip (Lot 282) estimated at $30,000-$40,000; a Southern Cheyenne hide dress (Lot 137A) estimated at $20,000-$25,000; and a rare Haida carved wood pipe (Lot 453) offered with an estimate of $20,000-$40,000.
Cowan’s American Indian Art auction will be held Friday, Sept. 18, beginning at 10 a.m. EDT in the Cincinnati saleroom.
