NEW ORLEANS — With her art collection dispersed through recent auction activity at Sotheby’s, Freeman’s and Toomey & Co., it’s now time for the late Angela Gross Folk’s silver collection to come to market. Neal Auction Company will have the honor when 143 lots of silver, sourced globally but with an American emphasis, go on the block Thursday, November 9. The sale is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Neal’s auction notes make an interesting point when they say items from the Gross Folk collection “illustrate the evolution of styles and forms, as well as the significance of silver and its role in material culture.” Indeed, the eight tea services up for bid “speak to the importance of the service of tea in the social life of times past.”

As an example, this Charters Cann & Dunn tea service dating to circa 1848-1854 features a unique design in which each piece is in the form of an acorn. The service was purchased by Gross Folk in 1980 and subsequently was exhibited at a number of prominent silver retrospectives. It carries an estimate of $12,000-$18,000.

A pair of sterling silver cups and covers by Hester Bateman (1708-1794) are dated 1784. Bateman was a prominent silversmith in the 18th century, and a rare example of a woman working in the trade. The cups feature a herald and are inscribed NEC ASPER TERRENT (“Frightened by No Difficulties”). The pair is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

Ball, Black & Co. was a prominent retailer in New York City from 1851 to 1874. Its Broadway flagship location was a destination for the well-heeled as well as the average window shopper. This magnificent soup tureen features cast stag heads as handles and a full-bodied stag figure as the dome cover handle. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
