LOS ANGELES — On Tuesday, July 19, John Moran Auctioneers will open its ReDesigned auction at noon Pacific time. The sale will present fine art, decorative art and furniture that will refurnish your house or simply refresh your home. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Musicians and music enthusiasts will love the two electric guitars on offer. One is a 1961 Gibson Les Paul Jr. six-string guitar in red, and another is an Ampeg Dan Armstrong lucite electric guitar with a blue case, estimated at $2,000-$3,000.
Among the artworks on offer, a standout is Throbbing Hearts (Small), a 2005 piece from the influential contemporary American artist Ross Bleckner (b. 1949-). Bleckner is best known for his work relating to loss and memory. He is quoted as having said, “Life is short. Life goes fast. And what I really want to do in my life is bring something new, something beautiful and something filled with light into the world.” Bleckner most notably uses recurring symbolic imagery, such as doves and flowers, but altered with a blurred, glowing sense of light. Throbbing Hearts (Small) has an estimate of $800-$1,200.
The decorative arts selection is led by a Benjamin Moore (American, 1952-2021) piece, a red and black bowl created in 1988 and dubbed Palla Series. It is estimated at $800-$1,200.
Along with glass, the July 19 lineup will include numerous decorative pieces in wood, including a J. Paul Fennell work, a dyed mesquite basket from 2001. Since 1970, Fennell (American, b. 1938-) has been a woodturner, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s that he focused on creating with hollow forms. Fennell’s mesquite basket will be offered with an estimate of $800-$1,200.
Another notable lot is Hammerhead Shark, a piece created in 1998 by Todd Michael Guevara and estimated at $600-$800. Guevara, aka The Fish Man, is an American artist (b. 20th century, year unknown) who captures the realism of sharks in fiberglass and finishes his sculptures with exceptional paint work resembling that seen on motorcycles and hot rods.
Completing the lineup of the ReDesigned auction is a 1980 Mercedes Benz 450 SL, estimated at $12,000-$18,000. It has automatic transmission, electronic fuel injection, a 4.5L V8 engine, original wheels and 97,100 miles on its odometer. It has retained its original Lapis Blue exterior and Camel Brown interior, along with leather seats and fine wool carpeting. It represents a level of detail and hand-assembled craftsmanship that is no longer used today.
