Highlights begin with an 1890 pastel on paper portrait of a woman by the famous French Impressionist artist Jean-Baptiste Armand Guillaumin, estimated at $8,000-$12,000.
Equally stunning is Joan Miro’s La Pluie Matinale au Clair de Lune (Morning Rain in Moonlight), a lithograph numbered 48 of 300. It carries an estimate of $2,000-$3,000.
Certain to strike a chord with bidders is a circa-1891 Steinway & Sons Victorian grand piano, serial number 71205, with an upholstered piano bench. Its estimate is $5,000-$10,000.
But the January 23 sale is centered around a spectacular collection of mid-century furniture designed by James Mont. He was among the most iconic designers of his era, blending the styles of Asia with mid-century modern and Hollywood Regency design.
The section opens with a pair of ebonized James Mont Asian Mid-century Modern D-shaped small consoles with carved ornamentation, parcel gilt decoration and with glass tops, which were designed circa 1960. Also worthy of note is a James Mont Asian Mid-Century modern low cabinet in cherry ombre lacquer and gold leaf in the Chinese modern taste, incorporating a Chinese carved giltwood figural panel. It carries an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.
The James Mont lighting choices open with a pair of table lamps in cherry lacquer and carved wood, each mounted with a Japanese carved wood figure, with the original wooden shades. Designed in circa 1960, the pair is estimated at $2,000-$3,000. Just as worthy is a circa-1900 Art Nouveau ormolu and molded blue painted glass plafonnier shaped ceiling light fixture with shell shaped glass shades, originally supplied by James Mont and identified as ‘Lalique Chandelier’ on the original receipt.
Also included is a James Mont ebonized and parcel gilt molded composition table lamp in shape of an Egyptian canopic jar, designed circa 1960, and a pair of James Mont table lamps in cherry lacquer and carved wood, each mounted with a Japanese carved wood figure, with the original wooden shades, designed in circa 1960.
