Banksy stars in Jasper52 street art auction Dec. 18
NEW YORK – Street art in the form of Banksy spray paintings and prints will be offered in a Jasper52 online auction on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
One of the highlights is an original poster made available exclusively at the “Beyond the Streets art exhibition in Los Angeles last summer. The Vandalism as Modern Art poster (above) depicts the mural that Banksy created outside the Barbican during Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Boom for Real” exhibition that opened in London last year.
Another Banksy poster in the Jasper52 online auction is after his famous Forgive Us Our Trespassing image of a praying street artist kneeling under a dripping painted halo (below).
Three street signs having spray-painted images attributed to the anonymous British street artist are offered in the auction. Painted on a stop sign is Banksy’s well-known Girl with Balloon.
Another, painted on a caution sign signaling a curve to the left, is titled Toxic Mary, which depicts a mother feeding an infant tainted formula from a bottle. From a UK private collection, each of the signs has a $1,200-$1,500.
Two of Banksy’s counterfeit £10-pound notes known as Di-faced Tenners—for the portrait of Princess Diana in place of that of Queen Elizabeth—are framed with a postcard from Banksy’s 2005 Crude Oils exhibition of reworked masterpieces. The postcard pictures Andy Warhol’s Marilyn. The frame measures about 18½ by 11¼ inches.
Seven spray paint on canvas works from Banksy’s 2015 Dismaland Bemusement Park exhibition held at a seaside resort town in Somerset, England are offered in the auction. From a UK private collection, each of the paintings, all different, has a $300-$400 estimate.
