Braque litho, Brazilian armchairs lead Auctions at Showplace sale
NEW YORK – On April 25, Auctions at Showplace will offer 280 lots from New York City metropolitan area estates, including a selection of fine designer jewelry from a 79th Street Upper East Side address, photography from New York Live Arts, 20th-century paintings and works on paper, furniture, decorative arts, and more. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Featured items include an untitled circa 1929 work attributed to Giorgio de Chirico. The oil-on-canvas is signed and dated on the lower left and depicts three male nude figures on horseback. Notable 20th-century works continue with a mixed media sculpture attributed to the American artist Louise Nevelson. The monochromatic found object sculpture is finished in white paint and comprised of blocks, dowels, wheels, and other materials to create depth and texture.
The lineup of 20th century works on paper includes a circa 1963 piece by Georges Braque titled La Rapace. This lithograph on paper from Plate 44 of Lettera Amorosa features Braque’s signature and the edition number 58 of 75. It is followed by a gelatin silver print photograph by George A. Tice. The image, dubbed Petit Mobil Station, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was taken in 1974 and bears the signature of the artist. The sale continues with Joan Miro’s Picasso i Els Reventos, an etching and aquatint on paper from 1973. This vibrant work is signed in pencil on the lower right and features an edition number of 160 of 182. The sale also features Miro’s Sobreteixims i escultures, a 1972 lithograph on paper pencil signed with an edition number 105 of 150.
The impressive selection of fine jewelry and luxury goods includes an 18K yellow gold, diamond, sapphire, and turquoise brooch designed by Marchak Paris. The double clip brooch features a detailed gold woven basket filled with a delicate flower bouquet of 12 brilliant-cut diamonds, sapphires, and turquoise stones. Jewelry offerings continue with an 18K yellow gold and platinum necklace by Boris le Beau. The piece features a central marquis-cut diamond flanked on either side by two marquise-cut rubies. Representing the luxury goods category is an Angela Cummings 18K yellow gold floral motif belt buckle with alligator belt.
Furniture highlights include a pair of Jorge Zalszupin Brazilian jacaranda armchairs. These mid-century modern pieces feature jacaranda wood and have been recently reupholstered in blue velvet. Also featured is a Maison Jansen modern vanity table and stool dating to circa 1970. Both the lift top vanity table and matching stool are comprised of stainless and chrome-plated steel, brass, and mirrored glass. In addition, the furniture selection contains a pair of Sergio Rodrigues Brazilian mid-century modern Jacaranda wood Magrini stools.
