CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In a career spanning 65 years John Little (b. 1928) has become Canada’s premier urban painter. He is known primarily for oil paintings of his hometown Montreal in the Fauvist style. A classic example of his work will be sold at Bremo Auctions on Jan. 23.

His untitled oil on canvasboard painting depicts a Canadian urban (probably Montreal) landscape with children playing hockey on a frozen lot. The painting, signed at the lower right “John Little,” measures approximately 18 1/2 by 22-1/4 inches in a gilded frame and has a sight image of approximately 11 3/4 inches by 15 1/2 inches. It carries a $6,000-$8,000 estimate.

Little’s work has taken on an even greater significance in the context of Canadian art. He has celebrated the urban core, the neighborhoods and the ethnic communities of the city center that were devastated by the urban planners of the 1960s and then the development of the suburbs.

In 1973 he became a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
