HOUSTON – Simpson Galleries, Houston’s oldest auction house, will present an auction series featuring works from the collection of the late art historian, curator and lecturer David E. Brauer. The first auction will take place Feb. 6 and will highlight key paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture from Brauer’s collection of over 250 pieces. The sale will feature prints by artists working during the British Pop Art movement including Derek Boshier, Allen Jones, Peter Phillips, Joe Tilson, Richard Hamilton and Clive Barker, in addition to well-known American artists Vija Celmins, R.B. Kitaj, Eduardo Paolozzi and Christopher Finch. Also featured in the collection are Texas artists Malinda “Honey” Beeman, Charles Schorre, Richard Stout, Dick Wray, Dorothy Hood and Earl Staley.

Born in Dundee, Scotland, David E. Brauer attended Sir Christopher Wren School and St. Martin’s School of Art in London, where he studied art and art history during the height of the British Pop Art movement. He collected works by teachers and fellow students alike, most notably R.B. Kitaj, Gerald Laing, Derek Boshier and Joe Tilson.

From 1968 to 1975 Brauer taught in London and Oxford and in 1975 moved to Houston after visiting to witness a space launch at Johnson Space Center. He served as head of the department of art history at Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and quickly became an important and sought-after lecturer speaking at the University of Houston, Rice University and the Women’s Institute of Houston.

Throughout his teaching career, Brauer also curated, and co-curated with art historian Jim Edwards, numerous exhibitions. Among them the seminal 2001 “Pop Art: U.S./U.K. Connections: 1956-1966” for Houston’s Menil Collection and the 1997 Charles Schorre retrospective at the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi.

A significant number of works featured in the first sale were recently exhibited in “An Art Historian Collects: The David E. Brauer Collection” at the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, Alabama, organized by MMA Director Deborah Velders. A number of works were also included in the 2011 exhibition “British Pop Art Prints: From The Collection of David E. Brauer,” UAC Gallery, Houston Baptist University.
