British recording artists star in online book auction Aug. 18

NEW YORK – Fans of British pop music will be tuning into a Jasper52 rare book auction that will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18. Books relating to David Sylvian and the new wave band Japan, and singers-songwriters Kate Bush and Marc Almond are featured. Bid absentee or live online exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.

Hypergraphia: The Writings of David Sylvian 1980-2014, is a comprehensive collection of the written works of the front man of the band Japan. Opium (Arts) Ltd. published the book, which is seldom offered for sale, in 2015. The hardbound volume (below) is in like-new condition (estimate: $200-$250).

Japan – A Foreign Place – The Biography (1974-1984), is an in-depth look at one of the most influential bands of the late ’70s/early ’80s. Published exclusively by Burning Shed in a deluxe hardback edition, the book features contributions from former band members Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri and Rob Dean, with archive material from David Sylvian (who did not contribute directly to the book) and the late Mick Karn. This first edition is in excellent condition (est. $250-$300).

An autographed and numbered limited edition (0157/1300) of the book Marc Almond, contains color and black and white photographs throughout. The volume also contains a 7-inch single containing previously unreleased tracks (est. $120-$150). Almond was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2018 New Year Honors for services to arts and culture.

Kate Bush gets a salute from her writer and photographer brother, John Carder Bush, is a 2014 edition of Cathy, photographed when she was a young girl. In like-new condition, this beautifully bound hardback with a linen cover has its matching linen slipcase. (est. $80-$100).

Far away from the music scene, old-school antiquarians will be just as compelled by a fine example of The Life and Explorations of David Livingstone, The Great Missionary Traveller. “Carefully compiled from reliable sources,” this 702-page volume is bound in elaborately decorated black leather. It contains one a color map and 19 full-page sepia plates (est. $200-$250).
