DENVER – On October 23-24, Bruhns Auction Gallery will auction the lifetime art and antiques collection of Jack and Linda Keenan, on-site at their elegant Colorado home. The sale features approximately 900 lots of European antiques dating to the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, as well as ensembles and accessories from top fashion houses. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The collection reflects the Keenans’ refined taste, which was honed over decades of acquiring the finest and most important pieces available in the marketplace. Moreover, the couple lived with many of these artworks and objects, appreciating them and preserving them for future generations to enjoy.

The October 23 session features 461 lots, led by a 17th-century French religious sculpture, or santo, that the Keenans converted to a standing lamp. The painted wooden male figure is taller than most santos, which tend to top out around 10 to 14 inches in height. With its lampshade crown, the art object with a practical purpose measures 54 inches. It is estimated at $700-$3,500.

Circa-1600 Flemish wool and silk tapestry, est. $18,000-$30,000

Another standout is a circa-1600 Flemish wool and silk tapestry depicting the Biblical scene of the aftermath of the Battle of Gibeon, during which God is said to have made the sun “stand still” — an event some modern pundits compare to a solar eclipse. It measures slightly more than 11 feet by almost 13 feet, and carries an estimate of $18,000-$30,000. The tapestry was cleaned and restored by the master artisans at Chevalier Conservation in France, a 104-year-old firm that has performed similar services for institutions such as the Louvre, Reims Cathedral, and the Hotel Georges V, and others.

The Keenans displayed the tapestry over a staircase around the corner from another stunning work that graced one of their hallways: an 18th-century Portuguese blue-and-white tile mural of a hunting scene. Given the inherent fragility of the object, it is unusually large and well preserved, measuring almost 4 feet high and a bit more than 9 feet long and sporting a few hairline cracks. In fact, it is among those that survived the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The tile mural is estimated at $21,000-$35,000.

The October 24 session includes 441 lots. Among them is an 18th-century Italian carved giltwood throne chair that Linda Keenan used as her desk chair in her library and had reupholstered in red voided velvet. The impressive furnishing is broadly estimated at $100-$8,000.

Just as regal is an 18th-century French Louis LXV giltwood armchair, estimated at $500-$7,000. It has retained its original silk and metallic upholstery, which is enlivened by a centuries-old type of embroidery known as crewelwork. The patterns on the upholstery are consistent with Jacobean motifs. In addition, the chair is embellished with gilt thread and tassels.

Also capable of turning heads is an early 18th-century French carved giltwood sofa upholstered in an Aubusson tapestry with a floral theme. It is estimated at $700-$12,000.
