NEW YORK – Doyle will offer an auction of Coins, Stamps, Bank Notes & Sports Collectibles on Thursday, May 5, starting at 10 am Eastern time. Featured in the sale will be The Robert J. Barish Collection of Canadian Postage Stamps 1851 to 1999, as well as a generous offering of United States coins and bank notes from 1795 to 2008. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The Robert J. Barish Collection of Canadian Postage Stamps 1851 to 1999 consists of approximately 3,000 stamps, many of which are condition rarities and the finest known examples. Barish was a lifelong collector who began acquiring stamps as a youngster and continued until his passing in 2019.
“Robbie” Barish was a medical physicist who performed clinical research and specialized in designing radiation shielding for medical facilities. He was a gifted musician who played the oboe in several orchestras, and he was a producer for New York and London radio stations and hosted his own shows. Barish courageously dealt with the challenges of hemophilia and served on the Board of the National Hemophilia Foundation.
Among the philatelic prizes from his collection are Imperforate issues of 1851 highlighted by 3 pence red, Scott no.1, used, with full four margins and a concentric circle cancel, accompanied by a 1984 Greene Certificate of Authenticity; a choice used example of the 6 pence slate violet Sc.2, Friedl 1982 COA; and a Plate Proof of the regal 12 Pence Black overprinted SPECIMEN in red, Sc. 3S. Also featured is the 1855 issue 10 pence blue, Sc. 7 unused, 1934 Royal COA; an 1857 series with an unused Never Hinged half penny rose, Sc. 8 2008 A.I.E.P. COA; and a 7 ½ pence green, unused o.g., Sc. 9 Royal and PSAG COA. More stamps of note include a perforated 1859 Wove paper 6 pence used Sc. 13, 2004 Greene COA and an 1859 10 cents black-brown used Sc.16, 1957 Royal COA. From the Large Queen issues of 1868-76 there are examples of the Watermarked half cent, used, showing the last L of Bothwell Sc.21b 1987 PFC, and another used example showing the H Sc.21b 2014 Greene COA; the 5 cents perforation variety Sc. 26iv, used, 2010 Greene COA; 6 cents used, showing G& watermark Sc.27b 1993 Holcombe COA; and a 15 cents used with Script wmk. Sc.30d 2009 Green COA. Examples of the Laid Papers of 1868 include used examples of the 1 cent Sc. 31 with 1958 PFC and the 3 cents with a 2010 Greene COA.
The above paragraph covers but a few of the choice stamps within the collection, replete with Jubilees, Tercentenary issues, some Never Hinged examples, and an Imperofate Horizontal pair of the 1928 $1 Parliament Sc. 159a. The collection is surmounted by a mint Never Hinged example of the famous 1959 St. Lawrence Seaway Inverted Center Scott 387a.
Coins
Within the coins section there are two Flowing Hair Silver dollars, dated 1795 and 1799 respectively, both graded Very Fine 30. Better gold issues include a 1907-D $5 Liberty Head, graded Mint State 66, and a 1907 $10 Liberty Head, graded Mint State 62, accompanied by an assortment of later gold, silver and platinum issues. Among the section of foreign coins is an interesting necklace replete with ancient Greek coins and other earlier pieces, as well as several group lots.
Bank Notes
The strong selection of bank notes features premium small size notes, including a 1929 Kiester Mn. $20 national, a Telford Pa. $5 Number 1 note, a 1928 $100 STAR, and a group of $10 silver certificates along with several United States and foreign group lots.
Sports Collectibles
The offerings in the sports collectibles category showcases several lots of first day covers signed by popular players such as Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, as well as individual cards, including a 1953 Jackie Robinson and a 1957 Sandy Koufax. Also featured are two baseball bats, a 500 Home Run and a Hall of Fame bat; an interesting celluloid pinback of Jackie Robinson; and a fascinating group of silver season passes to the New York Yankees games for the 1926 t0 1931 seasons. Other collectibles in the lineup include a set of standard gauge Lionel trains and a choice group of comics.
