Capo to auction rare 1950 Rolls-Royce, fine art & furniture, Aug. 26

NEW YORK – Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques will present a summer auction on Saturday, August 26, starting at 11 a.m., with the spotlight set on a very rare 1950 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith. The auction will also feature a wide-ranging selection of fine and contemporary art, along with many highly desirable antique and modern furniture pieces. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.com.

The 1950 Silver Wraith (shown above) is an example of the first post-war model Rolls-Royce made. The coachwork, by the legendary firm Rippon Bros. Ltd., Huddersfield, Bradford & Leeds, is cream colored, with wood paneling. It is a right-hand drive, identification number WHD87. The auction estimate is $40,000-$60,000.

In the art arena this month, Capo will feature a signed 1989 Margot Lazar (French, b. 1962-) oil-on-canvas titled La Lettre (shown below). It measures 45.75 x 45.75 inches, sight, and was featured on the Figuration Feminine blog. It has an estimated value of $6,000-$8,000.

Titled L’Attente, Margot (from the Barcelona Suite), an after-Pablo Picasso offset lithograph on Arches paper, 1966, is numbered 52/60. Published by Museo Picasso, Barcelona, it retains their blindstamp and measures 22.5 x 18 inches (image) and 29.5 x 21.5 inches (sheet size). Estimate: $3,000-$5,000.

An Eduardo Chillida (Spanish, 1924-2002) Barcelona I. Lithograph, 1971, is signed and numbered 11/75 in the lower margin. Sheet size is 28 x 19.6 inches. Estimate: $2,000-$3,000.

Additional art lots include a Continental School allegorical figure of Marianne or Ariadne reclining with crown of stars, globe and mirror. An oil on oval-shaped canvas, 18th/19th century, it is estimated at $1,500-$2,500).

There are two after-Alberto Vargas (American, 1896-1982) lithographs: Pin up in Polka Dots, 134/300; and Satin Doll, 1988, 121/200. Each is estimated at $400-$600.

Highlighting the furniture selection are a Victorian walnut davenport of typical form with rectangular, slanted-front desk with raised pen storage box and four side drawers, estimate $700-$900; and a set of six circa-1940 French dining chairs attributed to Jacques Adnet, $800-$1,200.

A Giacometti-style, rectangular glass-top iron coffee table is expected to make $400-$600.

Other noteworthy furniture lots include a Dutch marquetry chest of drawers, $1,200-$1,600; an Empire-style pier mirror and console, $400-$600, an Empire-style marble-top commode, $600-$800, and a Georgian-style fruitwood breakfront, $400-$600.

Decorative items include a Georg Jensen sterling silver circular tray with beaded rim (shown below), $1,000-$1,500; a near pair of 18th-century Chinese blue & white porcelain plates with dragon-in-clouds motif, $500-$700; and Kjell Engman for Kosta Boda art glass decanter, $200-$300.
