MARIETTA, Ga. – Eden Fine Antiques Galleries will celebrate a successful year with a Winter 2017 Estates, Fine Art & Antiques Auction on Dec. 1-3. Days 2-3 will feature highly desirable Chinese antiques designed and created by artisans and craftsmen centuries ago. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The jade in this auction is so finely hand carved and with such detail that one can only imagine the ingenuity and skill used by those who created such splendid pieces of art. A prime example is a white jade brush pot carved from a single piece nephrite boulder. The thick cylindrical sides of the brush pot are carved in varying relief with Taoist figures amid a mountain landscape. The jade brush pot is elegantly displayed on a carved hardwood stand. The jade is fine and exquisite, and the carving is smooth, brilliant with a moist appearance.

In another fine specimen, eight green jade plaques are mounted in a wooden frame to form a table screen, which measures 20 inches high by 13 ¾ inches wide. The spinach-green jade plaques are carved with Buddha figures and have Buddhist prayer inscriptions in gilt characters. The frame is inserted in a carved stand made of elaborately carved hardwood. It is likely that the lapis lazuli plaques were executed between the late 18th and the early 19th century and not originally intended to be used as a table screen but rather as a book.
