NEW YORK – Capsule Gallery in collaboration with Litchfield Auctions will present International Fine Art, a curated sale of paintings, sculptures, drawings and other art on Thursday, Sept. 27. This sale of 57 lots will begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time and features select works from New York, New England and international estates and collections. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Sculptures by Leoncillo Leonardi, Giacomo Manzù, and Antoine-Louis Barye are among the top lots of the sale. Lot 40 by Henry Moore, Hand Relief No. 1, 1952/cast 1956 (below) from an edition of 10 is a fine bronze rendering in high relief of a child’s hand holding an adult’s hand. This work is listed in the Henry Moore catalogue raisonné. The opening bid is $10,000.
Lot 39 by Lyonel Feininger, A Sailing Ship at a Dock (1942), is a distinctively geometric abstraction. It is ink on paper and is hand-signed and dated at the bottom. It was purchased by the current owner at Galerie Kornfeld in Switzerland. Bidding opens at $5,000.
Capsule Gallery is also featuring several works attributed to Old Masters including Giulio Cesare Procaccini, (circle of) Andrea Del Sarto and Francesco De Maria. Lot 19 is a large and masterful work of the Northern Renaissance after Gerard David (below). It is from an important collection and has been previously recorded in the National Gallery Catalogues. Bidding opens at $30,000.
Painters Roberto Montenegro, Benjamín Cañas and Carlos Mérida are among the Latin-American artists whose works are offered. Lot 27, Flamboyant (1951) by Domingo Ramos is from the Collection of Guillermo Rodriguez-Grau, Bahamas. Bidding will open at $10,000.
From a single New Canaan, Connecticut, collection, a group of exciting South African works is offered, including two large abstract landscapes by Harold Voigt as well as wildlife sculptures by Robert Glen and Dylan Lewis. Lot 22 (below) is a painterly interior scene executed in a soft palette by South African artist Maud Sumner. It was purchased by the current owners at the Everard Read Gallery. Bidding begins at $3,500.
An assortment of 19th century, modern and contemporary art, including pieces by John Hoppner, Louis Valtat, Liliana Porter and Ross Bleckner round out the sale. Lot 34 by John Piper is a distinct and lively work on paper titled Freshwater Isle of Wight (1983). It was also purchased at the Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg, and the bid opens at $7,000.
