BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Carlyle Galleries International Inc. will conduct an online auction of European, Middle Eastern, Asian and Latin American art on Thursday morning, July 19, beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific Time/1 p.m. Eastern. Carlyle’s latest online auction offers a curated selection of nearly 200 lots of “fresh to the market” museum-quality paintings, sculpture and works on paper from collections and estates across the United States. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

One of the most interesting lots up for bidding in Carlyle’s July 19 auction is a painting by Frank Sinatra (1915-1998). Sinatra gifted his brightly colored fauvist-style landscape painting to a senior executive at Caesar’s Palace Casino in Las Vegas in the late 1980s. It was consigned by heirs. The painting is offered with a reasonable estimate of $8,000-12,000.

A legendary entertainer and an icon of 20th-century culture, Sinatra was also an avid painter, experimenting in a variety of styles throughout his career. Sinatra’s are highly collectible today; painting Fourth of July Fireworks, gifted to Nancy Reagan, sold for $223,500 at Christie’s New York in 2016.

One of the lots garnering worldwide bidder interest is a painting attributed to the important female Lebanese modernist Saloua Raouda Choucair (1916-2017). The painting measuring approximately 12 by 16 inches was recently discovered in a Miami Beach collection. Dated 1951, it is believed to be an important early experimental work by the artist completed in Paris around the time of her exhibit at Gallery Collete Allendy, before her return to Beirut that year. The estimate is a compelling $15,000-25,000.

This is thought to be the first painting attributed to Choucair ever to be offered at auction. Choucair is best known for her modernist abstract sculptures, which have recently been selling for upward of $400,000 at auction. She was highly experimental, working in an elegant style of abstraction, unleashing her creativity across multiple mediums and materials in painting and sculpture. Her small-scale geometric paintings reflect a distinctive, highly refined understanding of line, form and materials. It is only in recent years that Choucair’s work has been rediscovered by the international art community, starting with a show at the Tate Modern in London in 2013.

Other notable paintings by Middle Eastern artists offered in the auction include highly desirable paintings by Manoucher Yektai, Iran Darroudi and Abdullatif Al-Smoudi.

Also up for bid is a superb painting titled Hotel Primavera by Italian Pop artist Valerio Adami (est. $40,000-60,000). The large format painting is an excellent example of Valerio Adami’s style that mixes classic Pop Art colors and flat forms with thick black contours evoking the appearance of cartoons with social, philosophical and literary references. Admai first came to international prominence in the 1960s with Nouvelle Figuration, the French intellectual version of Pop Art.

Another exciting new discovery offered in Carlyle’s July 19 auction is a 1926 landscape painting by Ardengo Soffici (1879-1964), an Italian avant-garde painter who was early Futurist and Cubist and after the First World I became part of the Return to Order movement of traditional style painting. The painting offered on July 19, is one of Soffici’s sought-after landscapes, executed in a fine style. It was recently discovered in a Kentucky estate and is offered with an estimate of $8,000-12,000.
