Carstens Galleries to offer Ibero-American colonial religious art Sept. 27

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Carstens Galleries of Boca Raton Florida will present on Sept. 27 a splendid estate collection of Ibero-American Colonial religious art and icons. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Highlights include 17th- and 18th-century artworks such as the rendering of a Florentine Madonna and Child (above) and the Virgin of La Silla painting known as the City of Lima’s patron with a unique large frame of the period (below). The latter artwork is well known, having been the property of Augusto Leguia, president of Peru, who gifted it to the ambassador of Venezuela in Peru upon his return there in the 1920s.

Another artwork of note is lot 13, an 18th-century oil on canvas known as the Flight to Egypt, which is pictured in the book El Barroco Latinoamericano, authored by Santiago Sebastian and published in 1990 in Spain, as one fine example of the works of the School of Charcas in Bolivia.

Complementing the offerings of the auction, several religious antique carved wood figures in excellent condition appear in the catalog, as well as a small group of fine certified Russian Icons. Featured among them is lot 25, a 19th-century work of art representing the Virgin of Kazan, done with an engraved and repousse silver gilt and decorated with cloisonné enameled halos.
