CHICAGO – Hindman’s first Important Jewelry auction of the year, scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, will be anchored by a strong selection of antique and Art Deco jewelry, including notable pieces by designers such as Cartier and Tiffany & Co. The sale will also offer eye-catching David Webb pieces and an array of stunning diamond and colored gemstone jewelry. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
“We are excited to bring to auction several pieces of exceptional and rare antique jewelry that have been brought together from a handful of longtime collectors for our May Important Jewelry sale,” said Hindman Senior Specialist of Jewelry & Watches Karina Hammer. “This diverse presentation is a brilliant example of fine jewelry-making covering multiple eras.”
Antique & Art Deco highlights include an antique Lacloche Freres enamel and diamond pendant watch, estimated at $8,000-$12,000. Created by an important jewelry firm of the time, Lacloche Freres is known for markedly beautiful jewelry and timepieces.
Also demanding mention are two pieces by Cartier. The first is an elegant diamond bracelet set in platinum, made at the beginning of the Art Deco period in Paris and estimated at $30,000-$50,000; the other is a unique Art Deco jade, diamond and multigem pendant with an estimate of $10,000-$20,000. The pendant is likely composed of a jade object the Cartier brothers collected on their travels to India and the East.
Another strong piece is lot 73, an Art Deco diamond and sapphire ring that has an estimate of $35,000-$55,000. It features an Asscher cut diamond, with its characteristic deep step faceting.
Completing the Art Deco highlights is a Georges L’Enfant French diamond and gemstone pendant estimated at $2,000-$3,000. L’Enfant was a master jeweler who produced pieces for celebrated firms, including Cartier. He created some of the most breathtaking jewelry of the 20th century.
Works by iconic American jeweler David Webb will be among the notable items in the May 16 sale. Webb has become renowned for his bold modern jewelry featuring gold, brightly colored gemstones, enamel and exotic animal designs. Celebrities including Diana Vreeland, Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as many others, have worn his designs. A particular standout among the David Webb pieces is a diamond, ruby and enamel horse bracelet estimated at $35,000-$55,000.
Diamond and colored gemstone pieces are also among the lots being closely watched. Highlights include a 5.02-carat D color cushion cut ring that carries an estimate of $150,000-$200,000, and an unheated Burmese ruby ring estimated at $40,000-$60,000.
Equally of interest is a Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co. bicolor gold, aquamarine and diamond bangle bracelet with an estimate of $15,000-$25,000.
