NEW YORK – You can own a Picasso. Yes, you. You can also own a Calder, a Chagall, a Dali, or a fine work by another well-respected Modern artist. Woodcuts, lithographs, and other forms of prints place these storied names in reach of budding collectors.

On August 11, starting at 1 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct a 65-lot Modern Art Masters auction, featuring lithographs by Rufino Tamayo, Hans Hartung, Pablo Picasso, Jules Cavailles, Marc Chagall, and many more. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

One of the many striking original lithographs in the August 11 auction is Recitative, a 1968 print by French artist Jules Cavailles (1901-1977). His masterful command of color is on full display in this depiction of a youthful dark-haired nude, shown from the back. Signed in pencil, numbered 64 of 190, and described as being in fine condition, this Cavailles lithograph is estimated at $250-$300.

Hans Hartung (German-French, 1904-1989) proves himself a match for Cavailles as a colorist with Farandole 11, an original lithograph printed in 1971 in Barcelona by Poligrafa Publishing. He laid down a blazing slab of orange and slashed it with thick black strokes of the brush. The rugged edges of the orange field and the varying thicknesses of the black slashes impart a sense of spontaneity and, perhaps, maybe, a touch of anger. Signed, carrying the number 19 of an edition of 75, and also described as being in fine condition, the Hartung lithograph carries an estimate of $1,100-$1,500.

This Jasper52 auction features a total of 18 original lithographs by Marc Chagall (Russian-French, 1887-1985), among them a 1960 image titled Creation for Drawings for the Bible. Chagall pursued an illustrated Old Testament project in earnest between 1958 and 1960, but the idea was originally proposed to him in 1931 by Ambroise Vollard, the legendary French art dealer. Printed in France in 1960, the blue-dominated image of angels, birds, fish, and the nude figures of the freshly-created humans Adam and Eve is estimated at $350-$400.
