CHARLESTON, S.C – Charleston Estate Auctions will present the fall auction event – a live online auction to be held on Sunday, Oct. 29 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The auction offers notable and rare items from well-known Charleston and Southern collections. Registration and absentee bidding is now available on LiveAuctioneers, and the auction will go live Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
The event is highlighted by rare Charleston and sterling silver, original artwork including an original work by Robert Steinem, fine and antique furniture, coins and paper money, vintage jewelry, collectible swords and weaponry, designer accessories, and much more.
Highlights include:
Lot 150: A late 19th-century large pair of carved Chinese red jade nephrite mythical pixiu (above), each depicted on all fours with tail curled by back lion’s paw foot. Each measures 10 by 3 ½ by 8 inches.
Lot 137: Robert Steinem original oil on canvas “Before the Wind Stirred” (below) painted in 2003. Incredible fall – water and trees reflected light painting, signed lower left and then signed, titled and dated by the artist on verso, 20 by 30 inches.
Lot 144: Michael W. Huggins (British b. 1927) large oil on canvas pink peonies in bloom, signed lower left M.W. Huggins, with monogram lower right, mounted in a large gold gilt wood frame, 26 by 38 inches. Huggins is a listed 20th-century artist known for his still life paintings.
Lot 148: Southern coin silver teapot, circa 1849, elaborately decorated paneled body, scroll handle, feet and finial, floral repoussé decoration. Monogrammed. With hallmarks for retailer Gregg, Hayden & Co. (Charleston, South Carolina, working 1846-1852), pseudo hallmarks. Hallmarks for maker Gale & Hayden (New York City, working 1845-1850). Measures 10 by 6 by 10½ inches.
Lot 122: George Chinnery (1774-1852) Fisherman with Wet Weather Coat, circa 1838, pencil drawing. The artwork was professionally framed and matted by the Wattis Fine Art Gallery. The Wattis Fine Art opened on Hollywood Road, Hong Kong in 1988 and has built up a reputation as the foremost gallery in Asia specializing in historical pictures, antique maps and travel books of East Asia. Jonathan Wattis, who joined Christie’s in London in 1977, has drawn on his wide experience of the international art market, as well as painstaking research.
