Charleston Estate Auctions to offer art, antiques from grand homes & collections, Aug. 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Sunday, August 2nd, Charleston Estate Auctions will present another high-quality selection of antiques, fine and decorative art straight from the grand homes of Charleston and nearby country estates. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

In addition to an excellent array of 19th and 20th century fine art, the auction includes a large collection of early black amethyst glass, antique Stevens & Williams glass, Victorian and Edwardian fine jewelry, sterling silver and Victorian silverplate; several fabulous cocktail sets, and a large firearms and edged weapons collection. The guns include antique flintlock and percussion pistols, rifles, swords and daggers of Continental, Arabic and American origin.

One of the top paintings in the sale is Lot 135, shown above. An original Robertson Kirtland Mygatt (American, 1862-1919) oil-on-panel landscape, this beautiful artwork measures 58 x 11 1/2 inches and is estimated at $7,000-$7,500.

Lot 103, below, is titled “The Storm.” Executed in 1861, this very scarce drypoint etching by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) is expected to make $3,500-$4,000.

Lot 106 is a handwoven 100% Tibetan wool ‘Bullerswood’ carpet of exceptionally fine quality, measuring 6 by 9 feet. A fabulous example of Arts & Crafts design, this fine-quality carpet is entered in the sale with an $8,000-$10,000 estimate.

Lot 148, a platinum and diamond ring, is a quintessential expression of Art Deco style. Its center square step-cut diamond is surrounded by round single-cut diamonds. It is estimated at $1,500-$1,800.

Of the edged weapons offered in the sale, Lot 162 commands its share of attention by virtue of its detail alone. The heavily gilded and ornate ceremonial parade sword has a hilt guard finished in style of an 1889 Prussian Infantry Degan sword. A mid-20th-century production, it is expected to make $150-$200.
