SARASOTA, Fla., – Charlotte’s Auctions, a South Florida company that specializes in antique Asian fine art, will offer the Chinese art and antiques collection of Chinese General Wang Huaiqing on Saturday, November 27, starting at 9 am Eastern time. Consigned by a relative of General Wang, the collection includes Chinese Imperial palace porcelain items and paintings. Bid absentee or live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers.
General Wang Huaiqing was one of the commanders of Pei-yang Clique, a dominant military force during the Republic of China. He suppressed and quelled various uprisings and rebellions with Yuan Shih-K’ai, including the uprising at outer Mongolia, and he was eventually appointed as the commander-in-chief of Beijing. During his military career, he played a key part in pushing further the development of the history of China. He released Feng Yuxiang and returned the right of administration of the Summer Palace to the imperial families of the Qing Dynasty. In 1924, the division of General Wang Huaiqing suffered its defeat in the second Zhifeng War, forcing him to relinquish command of the army and its jurisdiction over Beijing. As a result, he was forced to leave his residence in Beijing and move to Tianjin in 1926.
The general was an enthusiastic art collector, however he was not able to carry all his collections during his migration to Tianjin, so he gifted part of the collection to his cousin, Wang Huaitang, who lived in Beijing. In the late 1960s, Wang Huaitang and his family moved to Hong Kong and, in the 1970s, settled in the United States.
This collection of porcelains and paintings was consigned to Charlotte’s Auctions by Wang Hai, a descendant of Wang Huaitang. A press release from the auction house is quoted as saying: “To Wang Hai, these collections are full of memories that bring to mind stories of his ancestor that his family regaled him with during his childhood. Naturally, Wang Hai has been very curious about the story of General Wang Huaiqing. Starting in 2017, Wang Hai went to China to start the journey of tracing his ancestor. He found the patriarch of the Wang family, researched the original family tree in the family collection and learned about many wonderful stories about the general.”
Leading the auction lots is a blue and white Cong vase dating to the Qianlong period (1736-1795) and estimated at $5,000-$8,000. Equally captivating is a blue and white double-gourd vase (shown at top of page) from the same period and bearing the same estimate.
Still another strong porcelain highlight is a famille rose vase from the Jiaqing period (1760-1820) that depicts children at play. As with the blue and white Qianlong-era pieces, it carries an estimate of $5,000-$8,000.
Choice paintings include an undated scroll painting of an enchanting landscape by the noted Chinese artist Zhang Daqian. It is estimated at $10,000-$20,000.
Another painting worthy of mention is an undated work that depicts an orange and white dappled horse, signed by Ma Jin. It is estimated at $10,000-$20,000.
