CHICAGO – A rare opportunity to own a collector’s edition of 31 etched plates by Pablo Picasso comes on July 28 in Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ sale of Fine Books and Manuscripts, with Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com.

Entered as lot 126, the book is one of a total edition of 226, and one of only 135 printed on velin de Vidalon. It was printed in Paris in 1942 by Fabiani, and was bound by Lakeside Press, Chicago in ¾ red morocco over marbled boards, with marbled endpapers, and five raised bands and gilt title on the spine.

The plates had originally been commissioned by Vollard in 1936 to accompany the Comte de Buffon’s monumental work Histoire Naturelle. As fate would have it, Vollard died, and the Picasso plates ended up being published by Fabiani.

There is minor rubbing to the boards at the outer edge and slight offsetting from some of the plates; otherwise it is a very fine example. The lot is estimated at $20,000-$25,000 and requires an opening bid of $10,000.
