Chinese treasures abound at Oakridge auction, Aug. 14-15

ASHBURN, Va. – Oakridge Auction Gallery is excited to announce its next auction: an Asian Art & Antiques sale packed with an array of impressive lots of Chinese art from throughout history. Scheduled for August 14-15, this auction will feature more than 450 lots separated into two sessions, beginning at 10 am Eastern time both days. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Session 1, scheduled for August 14, boasts more than 200 lots of Chinese art dating from the Spring & Autumn period through to the modern day. There are beautiful carvings in all shapes, sizes, and types of jade, and delicate porcelains that are highly sought after.

The highlight of the session is Lot 177, an exquisite blue and white porcelain vase depicting delicate lotus and vine tracery. The body features a deep cobalt blue glaze on a soft white ground. The strong shape of the vase with its sharp shoulder, wide mouth, and tall foot are reminiscent of ancient Chinese ritual bronze vessels known as zun. It has a pre-sale estimate of $27,000-$35,000.

Other lots in this session include a mutton fat jade table screen dating from the 19th century, estimated at $22,000-$28,000; a large white jade carving of a fish dating from the Ming dynasty and estimated at $8,000-$12,000; and a celadon-ground porcelain censer dating from the early 19th century, estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

Session 2, taking place August 15, also contains more than 200 lots, among them a number of bronzes, embroideries, furniture, and other works of art.

A standout is Lot 350, a magnificent Chinese gilt bronze statue of Guanyin that comes with a two-part gilt bronze stand. It is a beautiful and clear example of Ming dynasty metalwork, with considerable areas of its gilt still intact. The stand is nearly as elaborate as the statue itself, with carefully sculpted lotus petals reaching up towards Guanyin and her gesture of blessing. This exquisite piece is estimated at $30,000-$45,000.

Other important lots include an 18th century bronze censer with a wooden stand, estimated at $12,000-$15,000; a 19th century pink-ground famille rose porcelain censer, estimated at $8,000-$12,000; and a porcelain sculpture of a Luohan by Zeng Longsheng, estimated at $5,000-$8,000.
