Choice antiquities surface in Jasper52 online auction March 6

NEW YORK — Relics from past millennia are being offered in a Jasper52 online auction of antiquities on Tuesday, March 6. The auction presents bidders with an opportunity to acquire authentic artifacts ranging from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

One of the featured items in the auction is a Crusader’s bronze reliquary in for form of a cross (above), which is decorated with period images of Jesus and saints. A reliquary is a container for holding relics-physical remains of saints, such as bones, pieces of clothing or some object associated with a saint. The bronze reliquary in the sale dates form the 11th to 14th century and is about 4 inches long by 2 ¼ inches wide. It has a $1,000-$1,250 estimate; the start price of this lot is equal to the reserve, or minimum acceptable bid.

From the Indus Valley civilization in southern Asia, circa 3300-2000 B.C., is a small terracotta bowl (below) decorated with an ibex, a wild goat (est. $150-$250). Like many of the items in the auction, it was obtained from an old British collection.

About two dozen lots in the auction are from the Roman Empire, including a small terra-cotta oil lamp that is decorated with an image of the god Eros (est. $250-$400).

Also from the ancient Roman Empire, which extended across Europe and the Mediterranean, is a 6-inch-tall glass jar with a handle (est. $400-$600).

Another Roman artifact is a bronze mirror with a handle that dates to the first to third centuries ($600-$800).

Leading the charge in ancient weaponry is a Greek bronze sword, circa second millennium B.C. ($400-$600).

Also included in the auction are Roman jewelry, Viking amulets and knights’ seals and crosses.

Many of the items in the sale have been professionally cleaned and polished to show original details and come with a lifetime authenticity certificate.
