Clars auction Sept. 12-13 to feature Raimond Staprans painting

OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery will offer a Raimond Staprans (American, b. 1926), Still Life with Red Piano Stool, 1987, an oil on canvas valued at $80,000-$120,000, at its Sept. 12-13 sale. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Leading the print portion of the sale are two works by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973), consisting of a Buste de Profil, 1958, lithograph on Arches wove paper valued at $15,000-$20,000 [7343], and La Pique Cassee, 1959, linoleum cut printed in white and black on Arches wove paper estimated at $20,000-$25,000 [7342].

A Helen Khal (American/Lebanese, 1923-2009), Untitled (Portrait of a Young Boy), will be presented at $10,000-$20,000 [7243].

There will be a Richard Wilson (British, 1713-1782), A Rocky River Scene (Study for the White Monk),” oil on canvas at $40,000-$60,000 [7225], an Antonio Paoletti (Italian, 1834-1912), Gelato Vendor (Venice, Italy), oil on canvas at $8,000-$12,000 [2287], and a Frederick Goodall (British, 1822-1904), An Arab Scout, 1858-1870, oil on canvas at $6,000-$9,000 [7213].

Several important sculptures will feature prominently into the auction including a Fletcher Benton (American, b. 1931), Untitled, 2006, painted steel sculpture valued at $8,000-$12,000 [7277] and an Allan Houser (American, 1914-1994), Silent Observer, 1985, bronze sculpture estimated at $10,000-$15,000 [7241].

The Furniture and Decorative Art department will present a fine collection of silver and objects of vertu. A German nephrite and semiprecious stone inlaid figure of a hippopotamus is attributed to Paul Dreher, Idar-Oberstein, and estimated at $10,000-$15,000 [7740]. Also sure to stir up some interest is a Tiffany and Co. Aesthetic Movement hot beverage service valued at $10,000-$15,000, and a William Spratling (1900-1967) mid-century modern hot beverage service estimated conservatively at $4,000-$6,000. There will be a fine selection of Buccellati, led by an Empire-Impero sterling flatware service expected to sell for $6,000-8,000.

The 20th Century Design department will feature a George Nakashima (1905-1990) walnut Frenchman’s Cove dining table circa 1963 [7370], and a Nakashima Studio set of six grass-seated chairs, New Hope, Pa., 1963 [7369], each estimated at $10,000-$15,000 respectively. There will also be an early Poul Kjærholm PK11 chair, and a pair of Cedric Hartman tables.

To celebrate sapphires, September’s birthstone, Clars has a fabulous Bulgari sapphire, ruby, diamond and 18k yellow gold ring with the original leather box, estimated at $8,000-$10,000.  Also available is a 3.47 carat Sri Lankan sapphire, diamond and platinum ring, accompanied by a GIA report, with an estimate of $3,500-$4,500.

The sale offers a dazzling array of diamonds in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. The highlight is a 3.45 carat marquise-cut diamond and 14K white gold tiara ring, accompanied by a GIA certificate, with an estimate of $12,000-$15,000 [7807]. A Simon G diamond and 18K white gold ring features a 2.05 carat modified brilliant cushion-cut diamond with a copy of a GIA report is estimated at $3,000-$5000, while a 2.03 carat princess-cut diamond and 14K white gold ring, with a GIA report is expected to achieve $14,000-$16,000.

The highlight of the Victorian jewelry is a micromosaic, onyx and 18K yellow gold bracelet dating from the mid-late 19th century, depicting architectural scenes from Ancient Rome and marked with Papal Workshop marks. This has an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

To round out the sale, Clars has a fine selection of Rolex wristwatches, including a lady’s DateJust two-tone and diamond wristwatch, estimated at $4000-$6000; a Submariner 18K yellow gold wristwatch, REF: 116618, at $10,000-$15,000; a Daytona Cosmograph, 18K yellow gold wristwatch, REF: 116508 at $15,000-$30,000 and a President 18K yellow gold wristwatch REF: 118238 at $12,000-$16,000.
