OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery set a new world record on Sept. 13 for Raimonds Staprans’ 1987 painting titled Still Life with Red Piano Stool, which realized $147,600. On Sunday, Nov. 15, Clars will present an earlier Staprans work, Pale Moon, estimated at $30,000-$50,000. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Staprans (American/Latvian, b. 1926) is a contemporary Bay Area painter, his peer group includes Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud, and his works are exhibited at SFMOMA and LACMA, among others.
Clars’ fine art department will have several major highlights by American painters including a James Weeks (1922-1998) Untitled (Figures and Dog), oil on Masonite, valued at $16,000-$18,000; and a Theodore Waddell (American, b. 1941), Idaho Horses, 1989 oil on canvas, estimated at $10,000-$15,000.
Also to be offered is a Mihail Chemiakin (Russian, b. 1943), Metaphysical Profile, 1978, oil on canvas expected to sell for $20,000-$25,000.
Clars will also be offering a collection of artwork from the Bank of the West art collection (Denver), including several works by Ralph Oberg (American, b. 1950), such as Golden Country (San Juan Mountains, Colorado), 1986, oil on canvas valued at $7,000-$10,000.
Modern Design will lead the furniture and decorative arts portion of the sale, with a monumental Henry Takemoto (1930-2015) glazed stoneware vase, estimated conservatively at $4,000-$6,000, an Arthur Espenet Carpenter jewelry box valued at $2,000-$4,000, and a Charles sand Ray Eames ESU 251-C estimated at $3,000-$5,000. Other designers including Isamu Noguchi, Aldo Tura, Maurice Burke, George Nelson, Gordon and James Martz, Edith Heath and Kipp Stewart.
A rare Rene Lalique “Libellule” glass mascot will carry an estimate of $8,000-$12,000, and a “Suzanne” frosted glass figural sculpture valued at $7,000-$10,000.
Also to be offered is a 1965 Ford Ranchero at $6,000-9,000.
For militaria collectors there will be a large selection of 18th-20th century European, Asian and United States swords, daggers and helmets from the Holt Military Museum, formerly in Lafayette, California.
For the Asian art section, there are several treasures from various estates, the most interesting being an official kiln from Qianlong dynasty, Chinese yellow ground famille rose ‘Fo Ri Chang Ming’ bowl (repaired) with afour-character Qianlong mark (est. $600-$800).
There will also be another vase with Qianlong mark that has a similar color, a Chinese lime green ground famille rose “Lotus” vase with a six-character Qianlong Mark, having an estimate of $3,000-$5,000, and also a Chinese lime-green ground famille rose jar having a six-character Daoguang mark, estimated at $2,000-$3,000 from a local collector.
The auction also boasts a fine selection of diamond, colored gemstone and gold jewelry and timepieces. Colored gemstones include rubies, spessartine garnets, sapphires and more, highlighted by lot 6878, a stylish emerald, diamond and 18K white gold ring estimated at $3,500-$4,500. The sale also features 21 pieces of gold coin jewelry for numismatists and gold lovers alike, the highlight being a charm bracelet suspending eight coins, estimated at $8,000-$12,000.
