NEW YORK – Classic designs and contemporary flair of vintage and modern jewelry will be showcased during an Aug. 14 online-only auction presented by Jasper52. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.com.

Present since ancient times, jewelry has been worn as a symbol of social status, a sign of affiliation with a particular organization or ancestry, and as a way to express individuality. Brands including Cartier, Van Cleef, Piaget and Tiffany & Co. are among those that have influenced the direction of fine jewelry. These names are represented throughout the Aug. 14 auction.

More than half of the 45 lots in the Aug. 14 auction are rings. Lot 24 of the auction has the potential to serve a dual-purpose interest, both as a unique selection and a stunning gift. The18K gold and platinum ring features a band of 13 radiant-cut yellow diamonds flanked by 125 round diamonds. The estimate is $16,000-$20,000.

Vintage brooches serve as a versatile and peerless accessory. A current trend on fashion runways is the use of brooches as hair accessories. The brooch provides an expected solution for holding “up dos” and “twists” in place. Lot 11 (below), a 14K gold, emerald and white diamond bow brooch, circa 1940s, from Trabert and Hoeffer-Mauboussin lends itself to sophisticated positioning on a garment or as an adornment worn in the hair. This lot is expected to make $3,000-$3,750.

Lot 4 (below), an 18K white gold three-piece pendant, part of the Happy Diamonds collection by Chopard, features one element in the shape of a heart. The three components come together, to form a singular pendant. Its estimate is $950-$1,200.

The current jewelry market is reporting upward of $160 billion in annual global sales, with analysts predicting sales of an estimated $277 billion by 2020. Evidence of the widespread appeal of jewelry includes interest in vintage jewelry like that of Lot 7. This 18K white gold ring by Italy’s Pasquale Bruni features pink sapphires at its center and diamonds on the sides. It is entered with a $2,000-$2,500 estimate.

Among the final three lots of the sale is the Tiffany & Co. vintage 14K gold money clip at Lot 38. Historical evidence shows use of money clips dates back to ancient China; around the time the use of bronze and copper coins expanded to the development of paper notes as currency. The vintage money clip (below) in Lot 38 is estimated at $550-$650.
