Clocks, silver, porcelain vie for top bids in online auction Aug. 5

NEW YORK – Exquisite decorative arts will be offered in a Jasper52 online auction on Wednesday, Aug. 5. Clocks, sterling silver, sculptures and ceramics comprise much of the 300-lot lineup. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
A large hand-painted porcelain elephant (above) by the Herend company of Hungary is in like-new condition – no chips, cracks or repairs. Its retail price when new is in excess of $3,700. This handsome figure is expected to sell for $2,000-$2,500.
Several fine clocks are offered including a Louis XVI-style porcelain and bronze garniture set made by Sevres around the turn of the 20th century. The movement on the clock is stamped by the maker “Japy Freres Med. D’ Honneur” and numbered 407. The clock, which measures 20 inches high, is in good running and striking order. The candelabra, decorated with hand-painted Romantic scenes, have 5 arms each (est. $2,000-$2,500).

A sterling silver compote having a pierced foliate design is German in origin. The basket-shaped compote measures just over 8 inches in diameter is marked 800 silver (est. $1,540-$2,300).

Numerous examples of sculpture are offered in the auction. Among the most impressive is a bust of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, carved in the late 19th century of Breccia di Sciro marble from the Isle of Skyros, Greece. The 24½-inch-tall bust is estimated at $3,500-$4,000.

Another Continental lot is a pair of ceramic Zsolnay ewers made in Hungary in the 20th century.

The ewers have an attractive red Eosin crackle glaze and are in excellent condition (est. $600-$700).
