NEW YORK – Last Chance by LiveAuctioneers will sell a collection of more than 90 paintings by Charles Gassner (1915-1977) at an online auction on Friday, April 29, beginning at noon Eastern. LiveAuctioneers.com will facilitate absentee and Internet live bidding.

Born Carel Antoon Gassner in the Netherlands, the artist was a painter of both abstract and figurative subjects. He studied art in The Hague and Berlin. Gassner arrived in South Africa in 1948 and in the early 1950s spent three years in Australia before returning to South Africa.

In these early years Gassner mainly a painted of figures using oil as his preferred medium for exhibited work. By the end of the 1950s Gassner was living in London and spent some time teaching at Camberwell. By this time his work was predominately abstract. Thereafter he returned to South Africa but a body of his work remained in the UK.

Gassner was one of a group of talented artists working in the distinctive South African school of representational abstraction.

Interest in Gassner’s works has grown recently and one of his paintings sold in excess of £8,000 at a recent auction in South Africa. His work can be found in galleries in London, Australia, U.S. and South Africa and in numerous collections, both private and public.
