Collection of steins to be toast of Cowan’s auction July 27

Many of the steins in the Cowan’s auction are marked Mettlach, the German city where Villeroy and Boch produced much of its wares. Cowan’s Auctions Inc.

CINCINNATI – Cowan’s Discovery: Live Online Only Auction on Friday, July 27, features two large collections: a collection of German steins, as well as a collection of match holders. Additionally, it includes a selection of fine paintings and prints, as well as an eclectic variety of decorative art, such as rugs, glass, stoneware, silver, lamps, timepieces and general Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

More than three dozen lots of beer steins are offered, including many group lots. Assigned the highest estimate at $800-$1,200 is a half-liter Mettlach stein, no. 2727, which is a printer’s occupational item (above). This 8½-inch-tall stein has a pewter inlaid lid and full incised marks to the underside.

Paintings include an oil on canvas by William Osborne Hamilton of a young couple in period costumes (below).

The auction contains more than 50 match holders, many to be sold in group lots.
