GRS-certified Colombian emerald, diamond and platinum necklace, estimated at $250,000-$300,000
PHILADELPHIA — Freeman’s Tuesday, May 9 Fine Jewelry and Gemstones auction brings the very best of statement jewelry to market, from classic diamond solitaires to show-stopping Burmese rubies. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The select 55-lot sale is led by a GRS certified platinum, Colombian emerald and diamond necklace from an important New York City private collection, presented at an estimate of $250,000-$300,000.
“We’re pleased to bring such a distinguished selection of diamonds and jewels to market with this sale,” said Head of Freeman’s Jewelry and Watches department Lourdes Winnick. “Collectors are excited about the kinds of large, colorful, rare gemstones we’re presenting here, and we’re anticipating competitive bidding.”
In addition to the headlining lot, the Fine Jewelry and Gemstones sale also features a platinum, diamond and Kashmir sapphire ring — notable not only because of its Kashmir origin, which lends the piece a velvety blue hue, but also its remarkable size, weighing in at slightly more than 7.00 carats. It carries an estimate of $200,000-$300,000.
Among the sale’s leading lots is a pair of Harry Winston platinum drop earrings set with diamonds of three different shapes, estimated at $175,000-$275,000; as well as a platinum, natural Burmese sapphire and diamond ring, reminiscent of Princess Diana’s iconic engagement ring, with its central oval-cut Burmese sapphire weighing in at more than 10.00 carats.

Across gender, personal style and occasion, brooches are making a significant comeback — and Freeman’s May 9 sale celebrates the accessory in its many forms. Leading the sale’s brooch selection is an 18K gold and diamond example designed as a butterfly, the perfect addition to a jewelry collection for the spring-summer season.
Fine Jewelry and Gemstones also features an important antique diamond and enamel orchid brooch, designed by Paulding Farnham for Tiffany & Co. Farnham designed a series of 24 realistic exotic orchid brooches for Tiffany & Co.’s display at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle; in the present example, hyper-realistic green, pink and violet enamel hues are fashioned with remarkable botanical accuracy to resemble a rare species of orchid.
