Contemporary furniture stands out boldly in Capo auction Aug. 29

NEW YORK – Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques in Long Island City will host their summer’s end auction on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m., with the spotlight this month on a unique selection of both antique and modern furniture pieces, along with some unusual decorative items. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide absentee and Internet live bidding.

The auction will also feature fine and contemporary art, along with bronze and a large collection of other furniture.

Already generating much attention at Capo Auction is a contemporary Bernard Duthoy (Belgian b. 1965) black and red lacquered cabinet (above) with three open glass shelves. Inscribed “Bernard Duthoy,” it measures 6 feet high by 6 feet 8 inches wide by 20 inches deep (estimated value $3,000-$4,000) and an Italian Renaissance carved walnut prie dieu, (below) 16th-17th century, having a frieze drawer with carved masque, cupboard below flanked by female terms, and a hinged lid to knee rest, on paw feet, 36 inches high by 28 inches wide by 24 inches deep (est. $1,000-$1,500).

The focus is also on a Korean Pyung-Sang summer bed, which features carved red lacquer insets depicting longevity motifs such as deer, cranes and pine trees (est. $3,000-$5,000).

Some of the more desirable decorative items at Capo Auction this month will include a pair of Chinese porcelain vase two-light lamps, circa 1840, 18 inches high (est. $3,000-$5,000); a 19th century Siamese stone relief temple carving, 11 3/4 inches by 7 1/2 inches (est. $300-$400); and an Erte Bronze La Femme hand mirror, parcel gilt, octagonal beveled plate, with fitted box, copyright R.K. Parker, 1985, numbered 67/250 with foundry monogram (est. value $1,000-$1,500).
