NEW YORK – Jasper52 will conduct a colorful auction of vintage couture on Tuesday, June 30. The sale consists of more than 100 lots of mostly dresses and gowns complemented by a few lots of jewelry and handbags. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
“Honey, put on that party dress,” a familiar line from a Tom Petty song, comes to mind when viewing a 1980s circle dress of lace and black tulle on a tan illusion backing. In like-new condition, this size 10 dress is expected to sell for $100-$120.
Cantilly lace, a handmade bobbin lace named after the city of Chantilly, France, is also the title of an early rock ’n’ roll song written and performed by J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. A Chantilly lace tiered and ruffled party dress of tulle crinoline has a knit bodice and a sash belt (est. $70-$80).
Designer gowns include a Marchesa Notte gown of a silk blend and cotton. Its yoke bodice is beaded on tulle (est. $120-$150).
A one-of-a-kind piece in the sale is the Ping-Pong prototype hand-painted satin shirt from the 1970s. The original owner never wore the shirt yet kept it for nearly 50 years (est. $350-$400).
An early 20th century Japanese embroidered and painted silk kimono offered in the sale has a stunning color palette with a beautiful design mix of floral and abstracts (est. $300-$400).
