NEW YORK – On Thursday, April 27, Capsule Auctions presents Spring Asian Art, a sale featuring an assortment of ceramics, sculptural objects, paintings and prints sourced from prominent estates and collections. It also offers a selection of jade, cloisonne and bronze objects. Representing a wide range of artistic practices from Japan, China and Korea, the auction includes centuries-old and modern pieces alike. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Indian art choices include a stone figural group that is believed to be a fragment of what was previously a larger sculpture. It depicts the creator, Brahma, with multiple heads and mounted atop a majestic hamsa bird, and is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Another Indian work of art, a miniature gouache on paper depicting Radha dressed as Krishna playing a flute to cows by midnight, is a wonderful example of Bundi painting. A gallery label appears on the verso of the gouache, which is estimated at $700-$1,000.

Also featured is a Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, titled Distant View of Kinryuzan Temple from Azuma Bridge. The work is No. 39 from the series of the Hundred Famous Views of Edo, and it is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

Another standout is a Chinese painting from the 17th or 18th century, created using colored ink on silk. The painting depicts the Buddhist judgements of hell, and features images of guardian figures, demon figures, and immortals. Its estimate is $5,000-$8,000.

Completing the highlights is a Chinese censer made of gilt bronze and graced with an archaistic design in the ding form. It also includes a carved wood cover that has a carnelian finial. It carries an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.
