Curl up with an iconic first edition from Hindman’s Summer Reading sale, July 26

CHICAGO – Until Tuesday, July 26, Hindman presents Summer Reading: 20th-Century Literature and Biography from a Private Collection, featuring first editions of many of the most loved works by some of the most iconic authors of the 20th century. With strong offerings in fiction and biography, this private collection offers something for all readers, including everything from classics to fantasy to politics, and more. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The auction features first editions – many signed – by beloved authors of the 20th century, including Douglas Adams, T.C. Boyle, Michael Crichton, Don DeLillo, Joan Didion, James Ellroy, William Faulkner, John Fowles, Jonathan Franzen, Allen Ginsberg, Sue Grafton, Joseph Heller, Ernest Hemingway John Irving, Ken Kesey, Stephen King, John Le Carre, Ursula Le Guin, Elmore Leonard, Doris Lessing, Ed McBain, Ian McEwan, Larry McMurtry, Walter Mosley, Mario Puzo, Anne Rice, Salman Rushdie, John Steinbeck, John Updike and Kurt Vonnegut.
Standouts include a 1930 first edition, first issue of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying in an unrestored, unclipped dust jacket, estimated at $3,500-$4,500; a 1923 first edition of The Vegetable, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s only professional play (which proved to be a flop), estimated at $800-$1,200; a first American edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, signed by author J.K. Rowling and estimated at $800-$1,200; first editions of Cormac McCarthy’s the Border Trilogy, each signed by the author and together estimated at $800-$1,200; a 1970 first edition of The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, signed by her and in the first issue dust jacket, estimated at $600-$800.
Also of note is a pair of memoirs from former President Barack Obama, offered as sequential lots: a signed first edition, second issue of Dreams from My Father and a signed first edition, first issue of The Audacity of Hope, which comes with a group of three invitations to holiday events at the White House issued during the 2013, 2015 and 2016 holiday seasons. Both Obama lots carry individual estimates of $600-$800.
