LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. – On Saturday, March 4, beginning at noon Eastern time, Palm Beach Modern Auctions will open its winter premier sale with a 194-lot single owner collection of works by famed 20th- and 21st-century artists. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Collectors can be obsessive, a trait which auctioneer Rico Baca is quick to count as a positive. Sculpture groupings on offer include 12 works by Harry Bertoia, including an undated bronze and brass sculpture estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

Among the eight available works by Louise Nevelson is Black Cryptic LXV, an intriguing 1979 box sculpture that carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000. A total of 15 pieces by Klaus Ihlenfeld are in the lineup as well.

The art glass segment of the collection includes 11 Paul J. Stankard botanical paperweights, led by a striking, signed example estimated at $1,500-$3,000. Certain to prove equally alluring are 12 Jon Kuhn prisms and vessels and also six Ross Richmond portraits.

Damien Hirst and Alice Neel are notably well-represented; the auction catalog includes two Spin Chairs and seven editions from Hirst, including Histidyl, a signed screenprint in colors from 2008 released in an edition of 150. Its estimate is $4,000-$6,000.

The 11 editions from Neel features the compelling lithograph titled Bather (Olivia with Red Hat), which is estimated at $2,000-$4,000. The signed 1982 work is from an edition of 175.

Also appearing in the collection are kinetic sculptures by George Rickey, found-object animals by Leo Sewell, George Rodrigue’s Blue Dogs, colorful vessels and sculptures by Danny Perkins and William Morris works dubbed “Stone” sculptures, interspersed with some adventurous studio and outsider art pieces.

The massive compilation of art does have some unifying features. Most of the artists lived and worked in the New York or Pennsylvania areas. The sculptures are tabletop-friendly in scale, making them excellent prospects for decorators or offices. Thematically, the art tends to celebrate the flora and fauna of the natural world or focus on faces and figures. When viewed as a whole, the patterns behind the collection are interesting. So are the psychological aspects of selling it off.

“Walking into someone’s home and encountering their collection for the first time is an incredibly intimate experience,” said Rico Baca. “The objects they’ve chosen to surround themselves with – things they’ve invested their time, energy and money to acquire – are a reflection of how they see the world and what they want to draw near them, a window into where they find beauty.”

“I am always careful in these delicate situations. Everybody wants to be validated that their choices were the right choices, that others will be similarly appreciative. I’ve found this to be almost universally true and in direct relationship with the passion they had in their acquisitions. While not everyone gets that payoff, I am certain this particular collector will.”
