Designer handbags leading the way at Sworders’ specialty sale Feb. 8

ESSEX COUNTY, UK – Gucci, Hermès, Chanel, Zandra Rhodes and Christian Lacroix are all top designer names that are featured in Sworders’ Objects of Desire auction in Stansted Mountfitchet on Feb. 8. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

In what is becoming one of the fastest-growing collecting fields of the art market, Sworders is attracting new and younger buyers for their regular offerings of vintage and designer fashion, jewelry and accessories.

“We are delighted to have attracted a new generation of buyers to auction and hope they will find many other things to delight them across our whole sales program,” said managing director Guy Schooling.

One of the strongest performing items since the auction house launched these sales almost two years ago have been designer handbags and the upcoming sale is no exception, as three examples illustrate.

The first is a Gucci crocodile Aviatrix Boston (above) bag with an estimate of £4,000-£5,000, the second a Hermès So-Kelly 22 bag at £2,000-£3,000, while the third is a Chanel black lambskin leather Mademoiselle classic jumbo flap bag (below), which carries an estimate of £1,500-£2,000.

Jewelry includes a Hermès chaine d’Ancre silver necklace, estimated at £300-£500, a vintage Christian Lacroix open-work collar, bracelet, brooch and earring suite pitched at just £80-£120, and a Chanel black leather and gold tone belt with hopes of £250-£350, as well as two Hermès bangles, the first is narrow blue enamel and gold-plated and estimated at £120-£150, the other, narrow orange enamel and gold-plated, with a printed abstract design, carries an estimate of £120-£180.

When it comes to shoes, Sworders offer a fascinating contrast between a stunning pair of 19th century cream silk ladies’ shoes, embellished with gold seed beads and sequins (£150-£250), and an amazing pair of fuchsia-pink suede signature pump shoes, with nude leather trims by Jerome Rosseau. (£80-£120).

A Zandra Rhodes vintage red dress (below) is another highlight at £200-£300, along with a Halston Heritage gray-green mini dress at £80-£120 and a Kate Spade “Blaze a Trail” red puffer coat at £200-£300.

Sworders have been particularly successful at selling designer silk scarves and two more of note will appear in this sale. Both are by Hermès and each comes in a box with ribbon and carrier bag. The first is Grande Roue, designed by Dmitri Rybaltchenko, with a printed geometric fairground ride sign, which is expected to fetch £100-£150, while the second is Charmes des Plages Normandes II, an orange ground with a printed seaside design at £100-£150.
