CLEVELAND – Gray’s Auctioneers announces Auction 34: 19th and 20th Century European and American Paintings, to be held Thursday, July 29, 2010, commencing at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. This sale features over 350 lots, with a particularly diverse collection of European art that includes a concentration of works by Hungarian artists. Internet live bidding will be provided by LiveAuctioneers.com.

Lots of note include stunning oil-on-canvas work by Welsh painter Augustus Edwin John, titled Portrait of a Woman in a Landscape. Measuring  32¼ inches by 27 inches, this large work is indicative of the style that made Augustus John notable among his peers, often drawing comparisons to Gauguin and Matisse. His portrait work is frequently described as catching an instantaneous attitude in his subjects. This painting, lot 85, is estimated very conservatively at $10,000 to $15,000.

The diversity available in this sale is apparent when viewing the four artworks by Hungarian Pal Molnar (lots 87, 88, 89 and 90) These works are warm, colorful representations of the Holy Family, and each is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Hungarian outsider artist Andor Sugar is also represented, with three oil-on-canvas works, each estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

Additional Hungarian artists available include Ferenc Gaal, Philip Laszlo, Istvan Desi Huber, Laszlo Neogrady, Pal Fried, and Jeno Freidlinger, as well as Mario Szantho, Miklos Radney, Antal Anton Peczely, Nagy Vilmos, Miklos Mihalovitis, Nandor Vydai Brenner, Mozart Rottman, and many more.

Auction 34 also offers a varied selection of landscape works, with notable pieces including an oil-on-canvas work titled Homewards, by British artist William G. Meadows (lot 67). This pastoral scene features a beautifully executed English landscape with figures, and is estimated at $2,000 to $4,000.

Works may be previewed Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Gray’s showrooms located at 10717 Detroit Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.
