Early Tenn. chest stands tall in John Coker auction July 27

NEW MARKET, Tenn. – A circa 1790-1810 east Tennessee, walnut chest of drawers is one of the star attractions in an estates auction to be conducted by John W. Coker Ltd. on Saturday, July 27. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet Live bidding for the 449-lot auction, which begins at 10 a.m. Eastern.

The tall chest features French feet and old, if not original, finish. It came from a log cabin in Green County, Tenn. John Coker said several regional institutions have shown interest in the chest.

The sale will also include clocks, paintings, prints and watercolors, mirrors, Oriental rugs, silver, porcelains, brass, fine glassware including Baccarat, Cherokee Indian pottery and baskets, furniture and lots of interesting pieces.

“Most of these are from to regional estates that have been in place for a long time, not something that has been shopped around pillar to post,” said Coker.

Additional items of note are an 18K gold Tiffany hunting case pocket watch originally presented to the chancellor of Brooklyn schools in the 1890s and a circa mid-19th century whalebone or ivory skeleton clock, which was found by a Tennessee collector at a New Bedford, Mass., antique shop in the 1950s. Coker said he decided to place the latter item in Saturday’s auction, rather than his recent clock auction, because of its folk art qualities.
