Early Texas map to star in Simpson Galleries sale Sept. 21-22

HOUSTON – Simpson Galleries, Houston’s oldest auction house, will conduct a fine art and antiques auction Sept. 21-22. The auction will include decorative arts, 20th century design, jewelry and collectibles for all levels of collectors. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The auction includes fresh-to-the-market property from private collections, estates and three major corporate collections that feature beautiful antique textiles, art, furniture, and important maps – most notably a 1862 version of Pressler’s Map of the State of Texas (above) and a historically significant antique Reconstruction-era map: Kosse & Scott’s Map of the City of Houston … of 1867 ($10,000- $15,000).

A selection of European avant-garde printmaking from the collection of the family of famed collector Ismar Littmann includes rare examples from Manet, Renoir, Kollwitz and Max Pechstein. Texas and Regional Art is well represented in the auction with outstanding works by Anthony DeYoung, Porfirio Salinas, Robert Wood, Frank Reaugh, Charles Umlauf as well as more recent artists Dorothy Hood (below), Basilios Poulos, Billy Hassell, John Alexander, Ida Kohlmeyer and George Rodrique. Traditional paintings will be offered by American and European masters such as Édouard Cortés, Robert Reid, Thomas Moran and William Keith.

The eye of discerning style aficionados will find jewelry and a sought-after “Steve McQueen” Rolex that comes for sale through the family of the original owner and a nice selection of early 20th century and mid-century modern design furniture and decorative arts.

The auction catalogs list 677 lots. The sales will begin both days at 1 p.m. Central Time.
