WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – East Coast Fine Arts will auction an amazing array of fine arts, and Asian and ancient antiques on Sunday, Dec. 10. Featured is a large painting of German shepherds by Percival Rosseau. All 700-plus lots are offered at $1 opening bids and without reserves. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The majority of the lots come from two one-owner collections in the Teaneck, N.J., and New York metro areas.

Percival Rosseau was one of America’s foremost animal painters. The gallery-size painting of two German shepherd dogs (above) offered in the auction is accompanied by a copy of an old New York Times article detailing Rosseau’s trip in 1912 from Paris to New York to paint society dogs.

Another well-known American artist whose work is in the auction is Max Kuehne. His WPA-era oil on canvas painting of boldly colored seaside cliffs with trees in the foreground is expected to sell in the $3,000-$4,000 range.

European art in the auction is led by Belgian James Ensor’s pastel portrait of a Pompeiian priest, which carries a $6,000-$8,000 estimate.

The auction will open with a 19th-century archive of more than 350 documents from the bark Petrel, a whaling vessel sailing out of New Bedford, Mass. It is one of the most comprehensive collections of its kind ever to be sold at auction and expected to fetch as much as $10,000.
